about

The second substage in the evolution of human consciousness is the sacrifice of oneness in order to join the group. This stage represents the journey from the development of the group soul to the emergence of individual ego. This is an era where man functioned as a part of a tribe or society where his actions were completely prescribed by tribal customs or dictated by a king or leader. Man was not a mindless zombie, but rather a member of an intensely competitive society that employed uniform, codified behavior to attain status. One’s position in a caste system was so structured that there was no need or occasion for initiative. Man was so dependent on its leader during this period because said leader represented a direct channel to the divine. This ability to directly consult the gods gave man a sense of control over previously survival threatening circumstance. Man developed fences and agriculture to bind the herd and cease continually foraging from widely scattered flora and fauna. In this regard, second stage man has sacrificed an unconscious sense of unity with natural divinity for an ability to interact with deities to better attain its survival needs. The morale of the group became dependent upon the supreme leaders ability to remain in the favor of the gods in order to avoid bringing about more misfortune by incurring their wrath. The realm of these deities was regarded as the true reality and the material world a mere illusion. Fear death, so prevalent in modern culture, was absent from these societies. Immortality was carved into every stone in the city and echoed in every prayer. Sacrifice of the body was viewed as a pathway to this land of the immortals. There was no sense of the importance of individual survival. This became a problem when invaders breached the city’s walls, because once the people’s leader was removed, morale plummeted, and the common man could not organize resistance. Hundreds of soldiers could topple cities of tens of thousands of people. This shattering of group mind forced man to ask questions of why and how this could happen, which in turn lead the development of individual opinion and eventually ego. It is interesting to note that the first two substages of human consciousness, as well as the last two (as we shall see), imply an immortality of its members. An inherent understanding in every person that their energy can neither be created nor destroyed.
